Surrender
November 8th, 2008 by jam“You’ve fought your whole life.” He is an approaching shadow in the gloom of the bar and you turn to make sure the path to the exit is clear.
It’s raining in sheets and drifts outside, really pelting down.
“And when you don’t fight, you run.”
You look back. He’s closer but he’s not rushing. Just out of arm’s length, he stops.
“There isn’t enough love in your life. When is the last time someone held you in their arms and told you it’s gonna be alright?”
You can’t help but glance at his arms. You know that would feel… safe.
“When is the last time you slept in someone’s arms - a deep sleep without one eye open for the door and one ear cocked for the slightest sound? When were you last safe?”
“Sooner or later, somebody will corner you. Maybe not tonight, maybe not this month, maybe not even this year. But you’ll be cornered and there will be no more running, no more fighting. You will have to surrender.
And to what? Half of these other pricks, it will be to your execution. Or worse, a life sentence of some kind.
You know that I love you. I’ve told you before and I know you didn’t want to listen. But I’m never gonna corner you. I’m just here to talk.”
Another glance tells you the path to the exit is still clear. Your heart is pounding and you feel butterflies.
He steps closer. You feel a shiver; you’re in range of his arms now.
“I want you to surrender to me. I want you to stop fighting, stop running and surrender to me. Surrender to love. Don’t wait for someone else to corner you and force you to surrender to death or suffering. I want you to know that you don’t have to be alone anymore.”
He steps closer still.
He touches you. Hands brushing arms sending bolts of lightning through your spine to your heart and your brain. Gentle, strong hands slipping around you to hold you. You tell yourself you can still slip away and run. There’s still time. You tilt your head back to see his eyes which are just dark pools of shadow above as he leans down to kiss you.
He kisses you.
Outside, it rains.
